Juneteenth: Freedom Moves

Clark County Public Art presents Juneteenth: Freedom Moves, a group exhibition honoring the profound legacy of liberation, remembrance, and community.Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States and honors the resilience, creativity, and cultural contributions of Black communities across generations. Through gatherings, music, storytelling, dance, and art, the holiday continues to carry a living history of liberation, remembrance, and collective possibility.

Freedom Moves centers movement as both subject and method. Movement unfolds through the body in gesture, rhythm, and expression, reflecting the ongoing journey toward collective joy and grace.

Lazarus House Gallery is proud to display two original works by artist Richard III for this special event: Separation Anxiety and Ascension. These powerful, acrylic pieces stand in direct dialogue with the exhibition's core themes of resilience, identity, and the journey

Separation Anxiety

At first glance, Separation Anxiety seems to contradict the theme of movement, presenting figures frozen in heavy stagnation. Yet, it is within this stillness that the work connects to the exhibition: the silhouettes are trapped on separate planes within a rigid architecture, rendering any movement futile. They chase an illusion of progress, moving apart toward destruction or emptiness. This vertical isolation captures a profound emotional distance—redefining separation anxiety not as the fear of being apart, but as the sobering reality of being together while spiritually disconnected. Ultimately, the piece serves as a powerful allegory for the relationship between the Black man and Black woman, illustrating that true freedom only moves when they move in unison, while the division of the Black family union keeps the collective stagnant.

Ascension

In Ascension, movement is woven into the very construction of the figures, capturing the upward momentum of the souls of Mankind as they float from the physical form toward the central source of all light. This trajectory is distinctly spiritual rather than physical, guided by deliberate brushstrokes that pull everything toward a brilliant, unified center. The composition focuses on the sacred migration of the spirit toward salvation, atonement, and restitution—the reclamation of what is rightfully due. The entire canvas represents a profound act of transformation, where the heavy flesh of man sitting beneath transcends into the weightless movement of the spirit flowing above, declaring that true freedom is ultimately found in the elevation of the soul.
