Lazarus’ House Gallery was founded in 2025 by Richard and Devynn Roberts upon an unshakeable foundation: faith in God the Father, the redemptive power of Jesus Christ, and the guiding light of the Holy Spirit. These are not merely background influences; they are the bedrock upon which every aspect of our platform is built.
Our mission is rooted in a deeply personal journey. We stand in the lineage of pioneering artists—such as Aaron Douglas, Henry Ossawa Tanner, and Georges Rouault—who unashamedly centered the Biblical narrative in their work. They proved that Scripture does not belong solely to classical church chapels; it can be boldly translated into the modern realm through abstract expressionism and figurative realism. Even a surrealist master like Salvador Dalí turned his brush toward the divine, creating iconic works that fused mathematical modernism with the glory of the Cross.
Yet, history also reveals a persistent hostility. When Dalí entered his sacred phase, art critics dismissed and condemned his devotion as regressive, just as mainstream exhibition spaces today continue to reject works that explicitly proclaim biblical truth or the name of Jesus.
Lazarus' House Gallery was created to answer that backlash. We recognize a clear double standard in the contemporary art world—where depictions of human suffering are celebrated, but the divine solutions of Scripture are censored. We stand as a dedicated home for Sacred Expressionism, offering an uncompromised sanctuary where artists can bridge raw modern techniques with sacred truth. We create and exhibit not merely for the sake of art or self-expression, but to glorify the God we serve.
